HISTORY
The church on the corner of Moggill and Kangaroo Gully Roads in Moggill opened on 5th May 1868 as a Methodist Church. This site has been a place of worship continuously since 1868, becoming a part of the Uniting Church of Australia in 1977. The new church building behind the wooden chapel was opened in 1979, with both buildings used for worship and community activities.
During the 1990s the Uniting Church extended into the Karana Downs / Mt Crosby area, with worship services held at the Community Centre on Swensons Road. Karana Downs Uniting Church was established and the site ownership was transferred to the Uniting Church. Worship and other community activities have continued to the present.
In 2021 Moggill Uniting Church and Karana Downs Uniting Churches amalgamated to become Brisbane West Uniting Church, retaining both locations as places for worship, small group activities, functions and community hire.
WHO WE ARE NOW
Brisbane West Uniting Church is a community of people from various backgrounds, of different ages and stages of life and faith, who come together to discover more about what it means to be following Jesus today.
We are one expression of the many different congregations who make up the Uniting Church in Australia (UCA).
Together with other congregations and agencies in our region, we form part of the Bremer Brisbane Presbytery - stretching from Brisbane’s inner-west through Ipswich, and as far as Boonah, Gatton and Fernvale. The Presbytery is responsible for the oversight and support of the mission and ministry within our region.
We are also part of the Queensland Synod, responsible for the provision and oversight of governance and regulations across our state - to equip, support and enable the various expressions of our church and their roles within the life of the wider church, including hospitals, schools, aged care, childcare, chaplaincy, congregations, and more.
Our Church Council at BWUC, together with the Minister, provides leadership and oversight of our local congregation, and the responsibilities we have. These different parts of the wider church work together to enable us to live out the call of Jesus in our local community.
ABOUT THE UNITING CHURCH
The Uniting Church in Australia was formed in 1977 as a union of Methodist, Presbyterian and Congregational churches across Australia.
Our statement of purpose and belief is known as the Basis of Union.
